History

Sittingbourne was bombed by Zeppelins and planes during World War 1. The Germans used the town as a reference point for navigation to London.

The first air raid was on Christmas Day 1914. A German plane visited and Guns at Sheerness fired at it but one shell fell in a field at Iwade. The next event was on 16th January 1915 when another German pilot from a Belgian airfield bombed Sittingbourne. This plane, a Taube, was chased by two local pilots but escaped after dropping a couple of bombs.
